The Oakland Art Center (A program of ACMHS)

The Oakland Art Center, which began in 1997, is a program of ACMHS that uses art as a healing tool for our mentally ill and developmentally disabled. Its members have severe mental illnesses such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and autism.  Through its therapeutic art services, the program has helped people who have been admitted to the hospital multiple times, become well enough to find employment.

Former ACMHS clinician and artist Noriko Inagaki aimed to create a "joint business venture" that would allow its members to create and sell their artwork to the public, contributing to increased self-esteem and agency in their lives. Over the years, Inagaki taught more than 50 participants the Japanese art of woodblock printing, creating dozens of beautiful prints that have been sold to the public in the Bay Area as well as in Japan!
